End of Abyss Story and Lore Primer: Who Is Cel?

Who Is Cel in End of Abyss?

Cel is the playable protagonist of End of Abyss — a young, low-ranked combat technician who arrives at an underground facility with a crew to investigate disturbances of unknown origin. Cel is not a supersoldier or a chosen one — a technician, sent in as part of a mission, and the official premise makes the role unambiguous: keep descending, maintain the equipment, and survive what the facility has become.

The official store copy sets up the shape of the story: a mission to investigate disturbances of unknown origin that spirals into a harrowing descent through a broken and abandoned world, with Cel uncovering the truth behind the facility’s derelict areas while confronting the creatures roaming them.

One design detail worth knowing: Cel’s distinctive spherical, diving-helmet-like silhouette wasn’t built for lore reasons first — it was designed for readability under the game’s pulled-back, top-down camera. In a twin-stick shooter you watch the character rather than seeing through their eyes, so a clean readable shape is what keeps a small figure legible in a dark, crowded arena. The helmet incidentally fits the descent: Cel is effectively diving into something deep.

What Happened to the Facility?

The facility was overrun by a parasitic entity — it had been sending disturbances, messages of unknown origin, and by the time Cel’s crew arrives, everyone inside has been transformed into abominations. Per the official hands-on coverage from Epic Games (June 2025), the compound’s occupants are gone as people; the monstrous creatures that fill its derelict floors — the zombie-like grabbers, mutated humans, and worse catalogued on the all-bosses page — are what became of them.

That is the engine of the story’s horror: this is not a facility that was attacked, it is a facility that was consumed from the inside, and everything in it used to have a name and a job. The floors Cel descends through — the hospital-like opening wing, the offices, the quarters, mapped on the map and areas guide — are the workplace of the transformed.

What the parasite is, where it came from, and why the facility’s transmissions took the form they did are the questions the descent exists to answer. Those answers aren’t public yet — we’ll verify them at launch.

Why Is the Facility’s Location a Mystery?

The developers have deliberately kept the facility’s location ambiguous — they won’t say where in the world it is, and the game frames its mystery the same way. A compound that could be anywhere, dug to unknown depths and broadcasting messages nobody can explain, is scarier than one you can point to on a map — and it keeps the focus on the descent itself rather than the geography around it.

The reveal trailer leans into that voice-with-no-origin framing with its hook line: “To the one who hears this message, we are waiting for you.” Who recorded it, who is waiting, and what “waiting” means by the time Cel hears it are launch-day questions.

What Horror DNA Does Section 9 Interactive Bring?

End of Abyss comes from Section 9 Interactive, a Malmö studio co-founded by Marcus Ottvall and Gustaf Heinerwall — both from the Little Nightmares art team — alongside co-creator Mattias Ottvall. The studio even took its name from Ghost in the Shell’s Section 9, which tells you a lot about the shelf its influences live on.

The team has been explicit about the reference points:

  • Alien and The Thing for atmosphere — confined spaces, body horror, an enemy that rewrites what people are.
  • Akira and Ghost in the Shell for setting and tone — industrial sci-fi gloom rather than clean futures.
  • Classic Metroid and Zelda for structure — the interlocking explore-gate-backtrack loop the map is built around.
  • Metal Gear Solid — an influence on the tension and the top-down vantage.

That pedigree is why the framing of this game lands as survival horror rather than action: the Little Nightmares team specialized in dread built from scale and helplessness, and Cel — young, low-ranked, alone against a consumed facility — is that idea rebuilt as a twin-stick shooter. The game is published by Epic Games Publishing and launches October 1, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Epic Games Store) for $29.99.

The studio’s official behind-the-scenes episode on descending into the facility is worth watching for the tone of the thing:

What Will We Learn at Launch?

The full story — what the parasite is, what happened to Cel’s crew, and how the descent ends — arrives with the game on October 1, 2026, and this wiki will cover it the same day. The endings guide will lay out every conclusion the story can reach, the map guide will follow the descent floor by floor, and each boss page will connect its monster to what it was before. Until then, everything above sticks to official material — no speculation presented as fact.
